Birthday message from Mercy Johnson Okojie

A message from Mercy Johnson's heart as she turns a year older today. Read below...
Today, I thought of many things I would love to have as birthday gifts and the many dreams I am still pursuing. In all of this I’m not losing sight of the fact that if not for God I might have ended up on the street like the many kids and young adults begging for food and some prostituting to make ends meet. If we know the circumstances that force some of these people on the street, we would spare a thought for them. I am where I am today purely by the grace of God and the grace of people who believed in me from the word go.
Recently, I was at the Boys Reform Home, Oregun, Lagos, the discussion I had with the principal Mr. Kotun and much later with the Special Adviser in charge of allremand homes in Lagos set me thinking about the boys and girls on the street. They have dreams too. Can they fulfill those dreams on the street? The answer will likely be no; because I won't be where I am today if I ended up on the street.

For this reason, Mercy Johnson Foundation will be doing a lot to get kids off the street. We are not asking people for money or donation, I will do all I can with the resources God has given me, and with the support of my husband to help get these kids off the street and set them on the path where they can begin to pursue their dreams. I want to plead with people, fans, friends and colleagues to spare a thought for the children on the street. We can begin by educating people around us, parents, the children and people in charge of children (Oga-house help relationship, teacher-student relationship, and others) on the need to treat every child like the future of Nigeria depends on it. And truth be told, our future will not be all that enjoyable if we let the scourge of ‘street-children’ fester. By then, the rich will begin to cry.  I learnt Lagos State Government has 11 homes where most children picked from the streets are kept, reformed and reunited with their families after counseling.

That is an initiative Mercy Johnson Foundation will be supporting and beyond that we will be going to different states to help spread the message-Get kids off the street, save the future. From tomorrow, I will begin to replay some of the lessons I learnt at the boys’ reform home and we all can contribute to getting the kids off the street.

I am grateful to everyone that has sent in a birthday message, tweet and gifts. Thank you and God bless you.
Mercy Johnson Okojie

Bayern drop first points of season

European champions Bayern Munich dropped their first points of the Bundesliga season in a 1-1 draw at Freiburg on Tuesday ahead of their Super Cup clash against Chelsea.
Bayern were on course to maintain their perfect start to the season after three league wins until they leaked a late equaliser and also suffered an injury blow when midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger came off with an ankle problem.
He is an injury concern for Friday's Super Cup clash against Europa League winners Chelsea in Prague as well as Germany's upcoming World Cup qualifying double-header against Austria and Faroe Islands.
"He will be examined in Munich, we hope that he will be able to play against Chelsea," said Bayern's media director Markus Hoerwick.
Bayern still moved a point clear at the top of the table, although Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen can all leapfrog them should they win their game in hand this weekend.
Bayern coach Pep Guardiola - who has introduced a new 4-1-4-1 system since coming in to replace Jupp Heynckes - made several changes to his line-up from the one that beat Nuremberg 2-0 on Saturday.
He rested six of his first-choice side, leaving out wingers Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, who both netted at the weekend.
"If you only lead 1-0, then you are always vulnerable to concede an equaliser," said Guardiola.
"I don't think I risked too much with that line-up.
"I don't know if we missed one or two players, I took the decision and those on the pitch played well."
Bayern dominated the game but, not for the first time, failed to convert a string of chances despite enjoying 75 percent possession after setting a new Bundesliga record of 81 in Saturday's win over Nuremberg.
"We only have ourselves to blame," said captain Philipp Lahm, who was one of those rested, but came on for the second-half.
"We had enough chances to make it 2-0, but we were punished."
Bayern had got off to a promising start and showed their class when German international Thomas Mueller beat three defenders on the right and crossed to the far post where Swiss winger Xherdan Shaqiri drilled the ball home on 23 minutes.
Freiburg started to exert some second-half pressure, however, and were rewarded with the equaliser four minutes from time.
Substitute Mike Hanke switched play from the left to the right wing, where Sebastian Freis swung in a cross which midfielder Nicolas Hoefler fired past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer from close range to delight the home fans.
Freiburg coach Christian Streich was delighted with his side's determination to hold the defending champions.
"When you play against Bayern Munich, you need above all an extremely high tolerance to frustration," he said.
"It's absolutely fantastic how we dealt with losing possession and worked hard to get it back."

The Welshman is set to be confirmed as a Blancos player imminently after Spurs finally accepted the deal, with Roma star Erik Lamela lined up as a replacement

Real Madrid and Tottenham have agreed a world record €100 million deal for Gareth bale to join Real Madrid.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy finally accepted the Spanish giants’ offer on Sunday and official confirmation of the transfer is expected to be made imminently.

ALL SET FOR MADRID
Alberto Pinero | Goal Spain
Bale isn't officially a Real Madrid player yet - but you wouldn't have thought that by the way he is being paraded in Madrid. He is all over the sports newspapers, radio stations and TV sports news channels. And let's not forget he's been the talk of the Real Madrid, and even Barcelona, press conferences.

It has been this way for several weeks now. Even at the Santiago Bernabeu as early as last Thursday there were people wearing the Madrid shirt with 'Bale 11' emblazoned on the back.

The clubs have come to an agreement on a straight cash deal to be paid in three installments, as Bale becomes the most expensive player in history, eclipsing the €93m Madrid paid Manchester United for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.

Tottenham have spoken to Madrid at length about including players in the deal, but left-back Fabio Coentrao is not part of the agreement while Real refused to include young striker Alvaro Morata in the transfer.

Bale is expected to sign a six-year contract at the Santiago Bernabeu reported to be worth €10m a year after tax, where pictures emerged on Friday of the club setting up a stage inside the stadium for his presentation to the supporters.

Tottenham’s decision to accept Real’s offer brings to an end a protracted summer of speculation and negotiations over the Welshman’s future.

Bale shocked Spurs when he told the club he wanted to leave during their pre-season tour of Hong Kong in July while Real Madrid were very public in their courtship of last season’s PFA Player of the Year.

Perez was desperate to make Bale his latest galactico signing after missing out to Barcelona in the race for Brazilian star Neymar at the start of the summer.

Bale has spent the weekend in Marbella in Spain having been given two days off by Villas-Boas, and he is expected to return to England briefly on Monday before flying out to Madrid.

Tottenham are hoping to conclude a €35m move for Roma winger Erik Lamela in the next 48 hours, with the Argentine considered a direct replacement for Bale, who was pencilled in to play on the right of a front three this season.

Spurs have agreed the basics of the deal but remain cautious following Willian’s decision to join Chelsea from Anzhi Makhachkala despite completing a medical and agreeing terms with the north Londoners.

Romanian centre-back Vlad Chiriches is also expected to join from Steaua Bucharest this week in a €9.3m deal, while manager Andre Villas-Boas still wants a left-back and a creative player before the transfer window closes on September 2.

With just days to the closure of the transfer window, the Nigerian may be able to depart for Wales

West Brom outcast Peter Odemwingie is wanted by Swansea boss, Michael Laudrup as the clock starts winding down on the summer transfer window.
The window is expected to close on September 2 in the English Premier League and Odemwingie is desperate to end the hell that has been the Hawthorns since last January when he desperately tried to engineer a last minute move to Queens Park Rangers.
"We want to add one more who can give us that in a certain part of the game or in certain games," Laudrup told the South Wales Evening Post.
"And he (Odemwingie) is a player with pace who knows the league,” he added.
The valuation of £2 million has put off the likes of Stoke City, Cardiff City and Crystal Palace who all want the Nigerian on their roster.
The 32-year-old won two Player of the Month awards in the 2010/11 season for the Baggies and ended the season with 15 goals. He scored ten goals in the 2011/12 season but scored just five goals last season

Liverpool 4-2 Notts County (aet): Injury-hit Reds sneak past League One outfit in extra time Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson saved the day after a second-half revival from the visitors but the withdrawals of Aly Cissokho, Kolo Toure and Joe Allen worried the Reds

In-form striker Sturridge netted his second of the game in the 105th minute before his midfield team-mate sealed the Premier League outfit's progress to round three five minutes later by making it 4-2 with a cool finish.

Those goals came after second-half strikes from Yoann Arquin and Adam Coombes had brought their spirited League One visitors level, following Raheem Sterling's early opener and Sturridge's first before the break.

"Liverpool fans would have expected an easy ride in the second half, with their side cruising at 2-0 up, but the admirable Notts County comeback brought them a rather unwanted extra 30 minutes ahead of Sunday's meeting with Manchester United.

"They may have eventually pulled through to seal their place in the next round but injuries to Kolo Toure, Joe Allen and Aly Cissokho represent the true cost of Tuesday's action."
Brendan Rodgers named a strong team despite the prospect of a Premier League fixture against Manchester United on Sunday, with captain Steven Gerrard and Sturridge both starting along with the likes of Glen Johnson and Kolo Toure.

Meanwhile, Notts County boss Chris Kiwomya made two changes to the team that lost to Stevenage on Saturday, with Jamal Campbell-Ryce and Aston Villa loanee Enda Stevens coming into the side.

Liverpool unsurprisingly dominated the early stages and were ahead after just four minutes through Sterling. The 18-year-old winger collected a pass from Johnson 30 yards from goal and jinked past two defenders before firing low past Bartosz Bialkowski.

Rodgers's men continued to control proceedings and substitute Daniel Agger - who had replaced the injured Aly Cissokho early on - hit the inside of the post after glancing Gerrard's set-piece delivery goalwards on 19 minutes.

Sturridge's movement was causing all sorts of problems for the Notts County back line and the 23-year-old was rewarded with his third goal of the season and his ninth in his last eight appearances after 29 minutes with a clinical finish. Gerrard was again the architect as he guided a perfect pass to the striker, who took one touch before firing past the helpless Bialkowski into the top corner.

The Liverpool skipper himself then almost added a third four minutes before the interval, lashing a left-footed shot off the post after Sterling had found him with a well-weighted pass.

However, Kiwomya's side responded admirably after the interval and their spell of pressure paid dividends around the hour mark when Arquin pulled one back. Manny Smith rose unmarked to head a free kick back across goal and the Martinique international beat Toure and Andre Wisdom to power a header home.

Liverpool then hit the woodwork for a third time as Toure met another Gerrard delivery but he could only strike the post when it looked easier to score and the home side were made to pay for their profligacy when Coombes equalised - netting his first senior goal - after good work from Arquin to force extra time.

County began the additional 30 minutes the brighter of the two sides and their chances were boosted further when Toure was carried off with a groin injury, leaving Liverpool with 10 men as Rodgers had already made all three substitutions.

Nevertheless, Sturridge then found the net against the run of play, latching on to substitute Philippe Coutinho's pass as a poor effort from Bialkowski failed to prevent his shot from dribbling over the line.

Shortly after half-time in extra time, Henderson - who had come on for the injured Joe Allen - burst through from midfield before nutmegging Gary Liddle and side-footing home to round the scoring out.

Keshi defends Moses, Mikel

Head coach of the Nigeria national team, Stephen Keshi is not bothered by the lack of playing time allocated to two of his most trusted stalwarts, Victor Moses and John Obi Mikel at Barclays English Premier League club, Chelsea.
The duo were left out of Chelsea’s two opening league fixtures against Hull City and Aston Villa.
Frank Lampard, Ramires, Eden Hazard, Oscar, Juan Mata and Kevin de Bruyne have been the preferred choices in midfield for the Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho in the Blues’ opening two competitive fixtures this term.
Keshi is however calm about the situation as he insists that “there are no sentiments in issues like these.”
“I am not in control of what happens at Chelsea. Mourinho is the manager of Chelsea. That’s what I have been trying to let Nigerians know.
“There are no sentiments in issues like these. For top coaches (like Mourinho), it’s about the team and never about the individuals. If Mourinho feels that Mikel and Moses are not ready to play in the opening games, so be it.,” Keshi exclusively told supersport.com.
Mourinho declared in July that players, who do not have regular playing time under their belt at their club, could struggle at the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil with their respective national teams.
Keshi has however disclosed that he has no qualms selecting both players to play for the Super Eagles whether or not they enjoy regular game time at Chelsea.
“(Failure to get regular playing time at Chelsea) does not mean that I will not invite both players to play for Nigeria. The only reasons that will stop me from inviting these players is if they are either injured or not in good shape,” he said.
Mikel and Moses have both been called up to the Nigeria squad to face Malawi in a 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifier in Calabar on September 7.

Messi in Barca squad for Super Cup

Lionel Messi has been included in Barcelona's squad for Wednesday's Spanish Super Cup second leg at home to Atletico Madrid after recovering from a thigh problem sustained in last week's 1-1 first-leg draw at the Calderon.
"In Leo's case, yes he is fine, he trained normally," Barca coach Gerardo Martino told a news conference on Tuesday before the clash between La Liga champions Barca and King's Cup winners Atletico.
The return of Messi, who missed Sunday's 1-0 La Liga win at Malaga, raises the prospect of the Argentine World Player of the Year and new signing Neymar starting a competitive match together for the first time.
Martino has been breaking the Brazil forward in gently since he joined from Santos in the close season and he has played only the final half an hour of Barca's three matches this term.
The 21-year-old rescued his team in the Super Cup first leg when he came off the bench to head the equaliser, giving them a slight advantage of an away goal ahead of Wednesday's return.
"He is ready as always and tomorrow we will make the decision," said Martino, who is bidding for his first silverware since taking over last month from the ailing Tito Vilanova.
"It's what I think best taking into consideration his arrival, all the interest he has generated, what he experiences every day," the 50-year-old added.
"To avoid him being overloaded when he is still getting to know where he is playing, the club, the players.
"Barcelona is too big a club to assume such responsibility so quickly and I am trying to create the conditions for him to get used to it in a different way.
"I aim to make him a Barca player for 10-12 years, I don't expect him to solve my problems in a single match."
GREAT ENTERTAINER
Wednesday's showdown features two Argentine coaches and Martino's Atletico counterpart and compatriot Diego Simeone said earlier he hoped both Messi and Neymar would feature for the benefit of the spectacle.
"For those of us who like to watch football, hopefully Messi will play, Neymar is also a great entertainer," the former Argentina midfielder, who also played for Atletico, Inter Milan and Lazio, told a news conference.
"We're expecting the best of Barcelona. We'll be ready for the best Barcelona," added the 43-year-old.
"They are better than us and have more chances of scoring. We have to prepare for that. The game lasts 90 minutes and we will look for how we can damage them."
Barca also celebrated the signing ceremony for Sergio Busquets's contract extension on Tuesday, with the Spain midfielder inking an already-announced deal to the end of the 2017-18 campaign with an option for one more season.
Still only 25, Busquets has won four La Ligas and two Champions Leagues with Barca, as well as a host of other titles, and the World Cup and European championship with Spain.
"It's a dream come true being able to continue at the world's best club, which is the club of my life," Busquets said.
"I try to improve every day. I want to win more titles, fight to win each match and put on a show with the same philosophy that we've had up until now."
Barca's promising Spain winger Cristian Tello, who turned 22 this month, will sign his contract extension until the end of the 2017-18 campaign on Friday.

Pastor Bans Hair Weaves in His Church

The senior pastor at Resurrecting Faith Church in Waco, Texas has advised his female congregation not to wear weaves to church. 39 year old Pastor A.J. Aamir said he grew wary of looking out over his congregation and seeing a sea of hair weaves. Pastor Aamir feels women wearing weaves presents a false image of themselves and are associated with women who have low self-esteem.
“Our black women are getting weaves trying to be something and someone they are not. Be real with yourself is all I’m saying,” Pastor A.J. Aamir told AmericaPreachers.com.
He said he “highly disapproves” of women wearing weave in his church, where the average age of the congregation is 22. Meaning most female members wear weaves.
“Long hair don’t care. What kind of mess is that? I don’t want my members so focused on what’s on their heads and not in their heads. I lead a church where our members are struggling financially. I mean really struggling. “Yet, a 26-year-old mother in my church has a $300 weave on her head. No. I will not be quiet about this.”
But why is a pastor concerning himself with a woman's hair? I thought it was more about what's in your heart and soul and not what's on your head? Anyway, I'm sure he’ll change his mind when tithes and offering decreases. Then he will be yelling 'All weaves aboard' Lol. #kidding. Your thoughts?

2 British Nigerian women assaulted & detained in China for 2 months

Two British Nigerian woman have been detained in China for more than two months after their dream holiday turned to nightmare.

Modupe Idowu, 59, and her friend Esther Jubril Badmos, 48, were arrested after becoming embroiled in a dispute at a shoe shop in the city of Guangzhou.

They were locked up in 'hell-like' conditions at a detention centre for 38 days and although they have now been released, the two women remain trapped in the country as their visas have expired and authorities refuse to issue them new ones.

Mrs Idowu's desperate family said the two women's ordeal began Ms Badmos asked the shop to amend an order she had lodged earlier in the trip.

She was then assaulted by two members of staff before both women went to a police station.
Mrs Idowu, from Islington, North London witnessed a vicious attack on her friend.
Daughter Sarah Murray said: 'Although Esther tried to defend herself, she was pushed to the floor, kicked and beaten - and handfuls of her hair were ripped out.

'A security guard locked them in a room and another man, who we think is the shop owner's brother, came to the room and punched Esther.'

When they arrived at the police station their passports were seized and they were pressurised into signing paperwork they didn't understand, before being flung into a cell overnight without food and moved to a detention centre the next day.

Ms Idowu, who is known as Mary, was put in a cell with six other women - forced to sleep on a wooden plank and go to the toilet in front of the other prisoners.

Her friend was taken to the centre's hospital where she was treated for her injuries.
Meanwhile Mrs Idowu's five children have struggled to find out any information about their mother - despite paying lawyers in China around £4,000 to find out - and two of them flew to the country to track her down at the end of July.

Both women were released on July 29 but since then have been met with an onslaught of demands including a £20,000 claim for damages from the shop owner, which was eventually settled with £4,500.
But their visas have now expired and they cannot be issued with new ones until police provide paperwork to show the charges had been dropped.
Despite endless visits to the police station, officers refuse to tell them when, and if, the documentation will be provided.

Mrs Murray said she barely recognised her mum when she saw her come out of prison.
'When I saw her, I thought she looked like an old woman. She could not walk properly. She was so frail and so skinny as she had lost a couple of stone as she barely ate.'

Mrs Murray, who returned from China last week, added: 'I can't really put this experience into words. We are totally confused. It's like watching a horror film.'
Her sister, Julie Idowu, 26 said: 'Our pain is very real. I have been crying every day. I have taken a lot of time off work as I'm so worried about my mum.
'Her health and mental state is a big concern as well as the fact that she has missed her operation.
'It's an injustice that my mum has been held for all this time for witnessing an assault on her friend.

Her other sister, Elizabeth Idowu, criticised lawyers, saying: 'People are exploiting our despair. They are making money out of our continued suffering.'
A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokeswoman said they were aware of the situation and were providing assistance, but could not comment further and said it was a matter for the Chinese.

Jose Mourinho reacts to Manchester United Stalemate

Chelsea grabbed point at Old Trafford

Premier League rivals Manchester United and Chelsea fought out a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford this evening and after the game, Jose Mourinho had this to say to Sky Sports News reporters.

"We did enough to be better than the opponent. We controlled the game for most of the time. We did not have real problems. We made simple mistakes. In terms of attack we did not give what we should.

"We play to win but if we don't win we don't lose and I think the players understand this completely. Both teams gave everything and I think towards the end my players went for the defensive position and to get the point."

"We didn't create more, not because of the system but because we lost so many easy passes. I felt United also lost five or six easy balls. It was a difficult match for both of us.

"We both wanted to win and both did not want to lose. It was a really big, big match but without goals. But we have six points from our matches at home. Some of our opponents have lost points already, so after this difficult start we are fine."

The Chelsea boss was then asked about the Wayne Rooney saga and the Portuguese-man had this to add:

"This is a special club with special fans and I think probably now he thinks he wants to stay. If that is his decision we will respect that and say it is over. If now, he does not want to leave, we are out of the thing but we need to know what is happening."

The reality TV couple recently fended off unfounded allegations suggesting the NBA pro cheated on his wife with multiple women, and have constantly denied rumors they are heading for a divorce.

Now, a new TMZ.com report suggests Odom’s alleged drug issues have taken a toll on the marriage.

The gossip site also alleges that Kardashian made her husband leave their Los Angeles home after he rejected an attempt at an intervention.

However, Kardashian took to Twitter on Sunday to slam the latest rumors and wrote, “Really hard to sit here and listen to people talk s– about my family! F– you and shame on you! I’m too protective for this s–!”

The couple wed in 2009 following after dating for just one month.
